What Is the Difference Between Antique and Vintage?
Yes, indeed! Is a furniture piece antique or vintage? For some people there is no distinction, as they associate the two words with ‘old’. However, whether a piece is ‘antique’ or ‘vintage’ has a bearing on its price and investment potential.
‘Antique’ means 100 years old or older. ‘Vintage’ means at least 50 years old. So today that means a piece made in the 1920s or before can be called ‘antique’. A piece made from the 1930s up to the 1980s is ‘vintage’.
Good to remember when buying
‘Antique’ pieces are not necessarily more desirable than ‘vintage’ pieces. A vintage item in good condition can easily be worth more than an antique item in poor condition.
