Zulu Basket – Ukhamba
R650
What a wonderful large traditional Zulu basket with lid. Khonzaphi Mhlongo made it in 1995 in KZN. There is a certificate of authenticity to accompany this work. Many people who work in these traditional craft have great skill, as shown by this basket. It is strong and in great condition. Craftsmen undergo years of continual training before being able to produce a piece of this quality. We believe there is a much stronger respect for these artists, in many areas of expertise, that wasn’t so apparent in former years.
This basket, woven from dyed palm leaves and named “ukhamba” after the ritual beer vessel, mimics the shape typically made of clay and used in ceremonial events like births, marriages, deaths, and annual festivals. It has intricate diamond patterns in brown, tan, black and cream with touches of pink. The certificate identifies the various dyes used and the meaning of various shapes used in Zulu art. This basket is completely environmentally friendly as materials used are from sustainable sources.
